Bill Bryson’s A Walk in the Woods was a major New York bestseller and still remains very popular today. It has become a must read for anybody who loves hiking and camping and has ever considered taking on a thru hike.
Bill Bryson is a much loved author and is probably best known for his book A Short History of Nearly Everything. He lived in the UK for 20 years and on his return decided to hike the 2100 mile Appalachian Trial.
In A walk in the Woods, he documents both the history and his experiences during the trail. The story is about the experiences of two middle age hikers. It reflects both a comical account of their funny personal experience and chronicles their experiences during the trail. During 2015 it was made into a motion picture featuring Robert Redford and Nick Nolte. View the trailer of the film at the bottom of this page.
The book is interesting, funny and sad and the story line moves from satire to introspection. One reviewer called it a “Thoughtful and laugh out loud story.”
It is available on Kindle and paperback and will leave any recipient of the book in stitches for days.
